Learning Reimagined: AI and VR Ushering in a New Era of Education
The education system stands at the threshold of a true changing phase. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) are no longer science fiction but powerful tools ready to be used to reinvent the rules of engagement in learning and teaching. Adapting the learning experience to an individual profile to a specialized experience immersed in a simulation environment is just a curtain drop.
The Power of Personalized Learning with AI
Think about the traditional one-size-fits-all classroom, where 30 students of approximately ‘average’ age sit together at desks and learn the same thing at the same pace for the same amount of time. AI brings tremendous new freedom to that situation. It’s able to draw on vast amounts of information on the same student in order to create a learning pathway custom-engineered to his or her style, strengths, weaknesses, learning requirements, and pace. A computer can advise us, for example, on what’s the most efficient way for our child to become proficient at English punctuation.
It can advise on how much time to allocate to this. It can determine whether the student’s skills are better acquired through learning from a book, a video, a computer program, or an educator. It can evaluate how fully our child is learning the material. Then, it can determine if he is moving at the appropriate pace or whether he should either slow down or speed up. Imagine a learning environment where every student is met at their unique level, nudged forward, or slowed down as need be so that the entire class ends up gaining the same knowledge but in a way that’s more engaging for them.
As a result, they absorb and retain more of what they learn. For instance, a student who has difficulty with regular math problems involving numbers – let’s call her Shelly – but does well at learning visually (sight, sound, or video) can be helped by AI that will recommend funny interactive games, simulations and visual representations of the math concepts. Each approach is more likely to stick Here’s where education has an edge.
We also need ways to help build the tools with the largest and fastest impact in our society.
Balancing the Equation: AI in Grading
In many cases, automating those kinds of tasks frees up time for teachers to do those much more subtle things: to emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving and encourage students to collaborate and help one another.
But if the grading you automate is multiple-choice questions or perhaps short answers, there is little that AI can do to evaluate essays, creative projects, or other open-ended responses. AI can be a helpful tool for grading, but there is still no substitute for the irreplaceable role of the teacher and the kinds of feedback that only a real person can give.
AI grading can be valuable for large classes, where it can be hard for an individual teacher to give feedback on every assignment. At the same time, since each AI algorithm is the product of constraints imposed by biased data, teacher oversight is key.
Immersive Learning with VR: Bringing Education to Life
Moving beyond the textbook and the classroom, VR brings learning to the students. History, science, abstract concepts – students can experience almost anything in VR. Want to teach an in-depth history of the Amazon rainforest? Can’t afford a field trip? Use VR to bring students to the heart of the rainforest and help them truly experience the history of the region. Need a new spin on science class? What about using VR simulations to show students how the human body works rather than just telling them?
Want students to experience ancient Rome but can’t afford to take them to Italy? With VR, history can come to them. Students can experience all of these things and more in VR, going beyond the textbook into a new medium of learning. Even better, VR can break down geographical and financial barriers, allowing students to experience cultures and environments found across the world in a completely accessible way.
VR can also create thought experiments in laboratories outside a historical context. Imagine this: a teacher leads a biology class and asks students to dissect a virtual frog. Alternatively, some students might appear to be doing a simulated chemistry experiment. The teacher’s intentions for VR may not be so outlandish. VR can be a platform for thought experiments, allowing instructors to create safe and controlled educational environments where students can interact with a subject-matter concept in a 3D space.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
But while there is much to look forward to when it comes to the new and exciting opportunities provided by using AI and VR in education, this is not in itself enough to guarantee that it will be done well. Educational practitioners must be trained in how to use these technologies
effectively, how to avoid the pitfalls that could undermine good teaching practice, how to counter any potentially unconscious or implicit biases that might creep into or be colluded by AI-driven algorithms, and how to solve problems and design new ways to use these services, tools and tools.
And with any new technologies, we must ensure that any new form of educational practice does not exacerbate existing educational inequalities in access to those very technologies.
But there’s no denying the possibilities these technologies hold – ones that could make learning more personalized, dynamic, and effective for all students. So, where do we go from here? If we’re smart and inventive about it, AI and VR could unlock a future that finally delivers what good education has always promised, placing it within reach of all learners.
Conclusion
As we stand on the brink of this educational revolution, the potential of AI and VR can truly reshape learning experiences for the better. If we harness these tools wisely, we can unlock a future that fulfills the promise of accessible and effective education for all learners.
